We at Wales Outdoors are keen proponents of quiet enjoyment of the countryside. After all, we go there for some peace and quiet and thoughtful enjoyment of the wild spaces, right?
So, we advocate zero tolerance for those who selfishly shatter the quiet with their enjoyment of noisy machines such as motorbikes and horrendously vicarious, noisy, powerful cars.
We say that those who own such vehicles completely disregard the environment, for the wild spaces they seem to enjoy driving through and for those attempting to get away from the noise encroaching upon all spaces.
A few years ago, I was climbing the highest mountain in Spain and for much of the initial ascent, up to about 3000 metres, the soundtrack to the walk was one of the motorbikes accelerating and braking and accelerating and braking... This was the only noise, nothing else, just motorbikes.
What right do the owners of such machines have to shatter the silence so? Furthermore, there is no need. There are such things as silencers. It's not beyond engineering skills to make a bike quiet. The bikes are made to be noisy as those that ride them, like the ilk of Clarkson, gain ego points by making the racket. The same goes for powerful expensive sports cars. No need for any noise whatsoever.
Why is there no legislation in place appropriately limiting the noise levels from such machines?
And as for the personalities of those who own loud and fast super bikes and trail bikes and six-cylinder sports cars - well, the least we can say is that they must be personality lacking...
So, we advocate zero tolerance of the owners of loud and needlessly powerful and brash machines. Send them to Coventry. Give them 'dirty' looks. Approach them and ask them to be quiet. Join the Noise Abatement Society...
Peace :)
