I've been a keen adopter and user of technology
but for a good while now I've been looking for ways out, methods to avoid having my data collected, having 'the man' know what I ate two weeks ago, one week ago, today.
I've tried a few bizarre phone options, The Lightphone (my fingers are too big and texting is not a good experience), Mudita Pure (a phone that promised much but is still to be delivered to supporters and will not worrk as a hotspot or modem for tablets) and I've looked at the Punkt 2 which looks like a good option but is pricey.
So, I've recently re-investigated this matter and I think I've come up with a compromise solution... I've bought an £80 Nokia 2720 which is a retro flip phone running KaiOS on 4G with hotspot functionality.
For someone who wanders off on the occassional camping expedition this phone is great. It has a 28 day standby battery life! It sends texts! It is a phone! Plus it will be my hotspot for use with my Likebook or iPad. Better still the OS is light and there is simply not enough space in there for google and others to sneak in very much data collection software.
I have decided to keep my excellent Redmi Note 10 Pro Smartphone as my camera and digital map device and will continue using this until it dies. Then I may well opt for a GoPro and a GPS (or jkust revert to paper maps full time) but while I'm getting such great photos from such a useful device I see no point in making that move just yet. And of course almost all of this phones functionality will remain useable either by hotspot or wifi useage. For weekends away I'll take the Redmi and the flip and that will be me off the radar and travelling light but with the ability to work and record and upload if I so choose.
And that is the key. No longer permanently attached to the internet but using the web when I choose to. It's a game changer and a plan that many are attempting, with various degrees of success and failure, to adopt. A digital life, keyed into the best that technology can offer, but at times my choosing...
Remove your sim from your smartphone and in doing so stick two fingers up to 'the man'.
