What Appalling Weather!

What a difference a day makes... from a low level and mild and dry waterfall walk to this - just about as bad as weather in Wales can get!

We met at The Gwyn Arms and intended a full day of hard walking in the west of the Brecon Beacons National Park taking in Fan Hir, Fan Brychieniog and Carn Pica, but that wasn't;t meant to be.

With heads down we began the slow climb up onto the ridge of Fan Hir and as we climbed the weather became progressively difficult, with the rain becoming horizontal and wind speed perhaps at about 40 miles an hour. There was no respite, no shelter and the day became a 'rain room' test of the walkers kit - who would remain dry?

Well, in those conditions the answer is none and the question becomes who would be least wet. Everyone was cold, gloves weren't working, feet were wet. So, after summiting on Fan Hir Andy decided to call it a day and descend out of the wind toward the lake, Llyn y Fan Fawr. Here we warmed quickly and lunch was had overlooking the relative tranquility of the lake which was protected from the wind by the ridge.

We remained in this protection as we wandered over the drumlins back to the start point and a visit to Tafarn y Garreg for a cuppa and a warm through by the roaring fire :)

Tall tales will be told about this day for years to come and despite the weathers ferocity it was still worth being out, if only to know that new gloves or new boots were on the shopping list :)
