Wales Outdoors had this in the planning for almost a year, suggested by two of the clients who first joined Andy for a walk in the Waterfalls area of the Brecon Beacons National Park in the summer of 2023. We gathered in other interested hikers and ended up with a group of six who attended, on and off, training days in the Brecon Beacons in the Autumn and Winter of 2023/24 and then the day of departure from South Wales was upon us.
The Drive To Fort William
What is there to say - an early start and a long, long drive up to Edinburgh Airport to pick up the three that travelled there by plane from London then onto Fort William, through the dramatic landscape of the Highlands for a well earned sleep and an early start on the Ben.
Ben Nevis
What a lump. This is the mountain that installs the most fear into hikers taking part in the Three Peaks Challenge as it is a slog, the route beginning as it does almost at sea level and finishing on the summit of the highest point in the UK.
We managed this in a respectful 7 hours, up and down, and then we were away, driving to the Lake District for our accommodation at Muncaster Hall, in the west and close to the ocean at Ravenglass. No time to party, heads down and sleep to be refreshed for the next day’s exertions.
Scafell Pike
They had been told this was the tough one but we were up and down in five hours, so, it couldn’t have been that bad. Indeed, it was a fine hike and Andy went via a lesser walked circular route that for the main part kept the group away from the masses :) Steeply up and down and so hard on the old knees but as you can see from the pics, a fun and exhilarating mountain day.
Snowdon
It was a rainy start to the day and straight up over the broken ground of the Pyg Track, the shortest route to the summit but quite tough in places. Andy was being called all the names under the sun, tongue in cheek of course, until the summit cafe was reached and smiles and expressions of relief and achievement as the six women had just completed (almost, there was still the hike back down to complete) The Three Peaks Challenge!
