Join Andy and friends on his Wye Valley Wander this coming Saturday! It’s a very fine walk indeed, available to most levels of fitness (one or three short but steep hills) and taking in a good variety of points of interest. These are the highlights…
Whitchurch
It’s where we meet and there is a lovely cafe with homemade cake and sandwiches on sale. A good place for a cuppa both before and after our trek.
Symmonds Yat
A fine spot to observe the dramatic winding of the great River Wye, with views from high up and looking down and over forest and farmland.
Biblins Bridge
It’s a ‘wibbly wobbly’ bridge for sure. A wire rope and oak construction with a limit of six people at a time on it, it gives all a leg tremble due to its movement and some tremble a little from within too.
King Arthurs Cave
There are many King Arthur’s Caves dotted across the UK but I like to feel, with the association of King Vortigen, that this cave is ‘the one’. Certainly inhabited since the Palaeolithic, and with Vortigen and Merlin’s stories sometimes entwined, let’s go inside and imagine Merlin taking shelter or bringing the young Arthur to this place.
Little Doward Hill Fort
One of the largest Iron Age hill forts in the UK and one of the contested sites of King Vortigen. Here it is said he made his last stand. But other sites in Wales lay claim to that too. It’s a fine fort with ramparts clearly visible.
