After chatting to my Assembly Member for months now, and to be fair he has put in much effort trying to get to the bottom of things for me, and me trying to deal with anyone at Meta for years, I’ve decided to give up. Life is too short. They win. But of course, they always were going to win. Meta, control the narrative by having politicians in their pockets and by dictating the future shape of our digital life and therefore our social structures.
My personal account is banned for life from running Facebook ads and my Facebook pages are shadowbanned with each new post being seen by fewer and fewer people. No reason given. My AM can’t get a straight answer out of Meta. But I think I know why.
I’ve not broken any of the rules at Instagram or at Facebook but I have criticised both for delivering platforms that actively encourage child sexual abuse and for promoting porn to youths. I’ve evidenced this on several occasions, first with Instagram a couple of years back and this year, once again, with Facebook. I’ve sent the evidence to the UK and Welsh Governments, Nick Clegg the VP of Meta, the South Wales Police, the mainstream and alternative media and to the NSPCC. Apart from my AM taking this on and getting nowhere, the response was tumbleweed… Despite my evidencing criminal publishing to minors and the encouragement of engagement by minors with such, not one authority has the balls to take action.
More likely a reason for my ‘cancelling’ though is that during the pandemic I was outspoken against government policy, the lockdowns, mask wearing, the vaccine rollout and I believe that it is this stance taken that has led to the near fatal attack on my business by the policy makers at Meta. It is likely, and I say likely as even my AM can’t get a straight answer from Meta and the reasons for their publishing decisions regarding Wales Outdoors, that my posts during the pandemic were the catalyst for the cancellation of Wales Outdoors. It is Facebook’s reaction to these pandemic posts, guided by US and UK Government directives, that destroyed a once thriving community business reliant upon Facebook distribution and organic sharing of our events.
And so the client base at Wales Outdoors has had to change. Wales Outdoors is once again thriving, after I re built the business over the past year, and now we deliver our amazing walks mostly to tourists to Wales and those with the cash to pay the increased fees, increased as most bookings now come through agencies that charge us up to 33% commission on all sales.
And so, as Facebook and Instagram are not working for Wales Outdoors, and as Facebook and Instagram are a hotbed of child abuse criminality, operating as they do with impunity, and as Facebook and Instagram are publishers of government propaganda and lies and not an open platform that allows for the free exchange of comment or ideas, then I am not minded to give Facebook or Instagram any more of my time or traffic.
I will still post to the Facebook Pages that I manage but these posts will be signposts to the Wales Outdoors content at the Wales Outdoors blog. This is published here, on Substack, a platform dedicated to free speech and honesty. I can’t ethically continue to provide Facebook with content and especially when it is a time consuming and of zero benefit task.
I see the day, perhaps a year into the future, when I will permanently delete my Facebook Pages. At this time I will also delete my Instagram account. Regard the forthcoming months as a lead in to this and favourite this blog to be kept in the loop regarding all things Wales Outdoors.
