eBay
THE MONDAY MOAN - A once a week spot for us to moan about the stuff that perhaps we should all be moaning about that little bit more...
Just a quick moan today and a continuance of the hate for the 'internet giants' theme...
eBay, a company that when it was super popular, back in 2006 or so, I had high hopes for. A place where people would re-cycle their stuff by selling on, a space that encouraged innovation and small incomes by providing a shopfront for all.
It could have been sooo good. But it is now a behemoth that encourages the 'winning' of stuff that you really never thought you needed and so the selling of poorly made goods at the expected low rates. It still enables us to recycle, but at a high cost (listing fees and sales fees and PayPal fees - is it really worth it?), but in the main it is there, like most other sales outlets, to encourage us to destroy the planet with our consumerism.
I wanted to sell two used items on eBay recently and having given up my links with PayPal (see http://walesoutdoors.co.uk/information/paypal/ ) I thought I would be able to list with a cash only or pay by credit card through my online shop... No chance. You have to receive payment through PayPal.
So, I won't be selling on eBay again. I'll close my account. That's it. Done.
I just wish that these companies were people driven rather than profit driven. The force for good that they could be is immeasurable. And they know that. But it's the dollars that drive them and so it's the dark side that they have been drawn too...
