Cup And Ring Marks

In Northumbria there is the best example of cup and ring marking in the UK and being a bit of a Megalithomaniac I paid the location a visit.

I was disappointed to find no parking, no signage and no interpretation of this hugely significant site that just happens to be situated close to a well loved waterfall, again with no signage or interpretation.

If this site were anywhere else, other than in the UK, it would be cherished and it's history shared with all who paid it a visit. But not in the UK.

As you can see on this OS map the Cup and Ring marked rock is labelled but there is no clear indication as to it's location. I believed it to be in the field with the wording, but this was double height fenced and so getting in was out of the question.

We never got to see the waterfall or the cup and ring marked rock.

Here you can see the google street view of the location with the rock visible from the road. Of course that is only in Winter. We visited at the height of summer with the hedgerow full and overgrown and impenetrable. There was no way could we have spied the large lump. You can find out more and read about the rock HERE

I guess we should have done a little more homework before passing this place, an aside to the journey we were making from Wooler to Lindisfarne but come on UK authorities, please begin to. do a decent job of sharing our wonderful history.
