On a recent wild camping trip to North Wales the Wales Outdoors owner experienced a midge free environment and stunning weather - a week later in Mid Wales it was a different story.
Going for a wild camp in some forestry Andy was eaten alive and could only pitch the tent and zip up the entrance, remaining caged for the duration of the evening.Â
There are areas to avoid, damp bogs and lakesides sometimes but forestry definitely. Andy's worst midge days have been in Scotland and so he rarely visits the Highlands in the summer. However, a campsite near Merthyr was the scene of some terrible midge biting a couple of years ago and put the Scottish midges to shame for their tardiness.
